Additional Courses: Club President Eileen Parsons welcomes all club members past and recent to get active this year and join us on the mats for the 2015-16 season! Our dojo at 21 Mews Place in St. John's . We take new athletes on a continual basis and we have coaches solely for new first time Judo athletes. Both competitive and Recreation Training. Dress: Be sure to wear a long sleeve shirt, track pants and no jewelry. The MUN Dojo also prepares its students for national and international competitions. Have fun learning a new skill and laughing is encouraged. MUN Judo accepts students on a continual basis all year long.
  • Semesters are: Fall - September-December, Winter - January-May, Summer - June-August
  • Club membership includes membership in Judo Canada and the Newfoundland & Labrador Judo Association
  • Families with more than one member are eligible for a reduced membership rate! New members must register and pay their fees before joining training sessions. Returning club members must renew their memberships within two weeks of resuming training.
  • The cost for a basic Judogi (uniform) is approximately $80 for a white gi, approximately $100 for a blue gi. Judogis can be ordered through the club.
  • Financial assistance is available for economically disadvantaged children (16 and under) for registration and/or Judogi purchase costs. Contact George Beckett for more information.

Note: Maurice is a native Newfoundlander with Forty years experience in Judo. He is a Fifth degree black belt (Godan) (Highest Black Belt Judoka in the Newfoundland and Labrador Judo Association) in Judo and is qualified as a National Level B Judo referee and is an NCCP level III certified coach as well as being the Chief referee for Newfoundland & Labrador. He is also a member of the provincial and Atlantic Black belt Grading Boards. He is the Head Coach and self-defense instructor for our club and has been a coach or manager for the Newfoundland and Labrador male judo team at 5 Canada Winter Games in 1983, 1987, 1991 and 1999. Most recently he was Male Coach, Canada Winter Games, Prince George, BC, February 2015. In August 2009 he was part of the NL Mission Staff for Canada Summer Games which were held in PEI. Sensei Sheppard is also a former national and international Judo competitor and brings vast coaching and competitive experience to the MUN club. He was the first person to carry the Olympic Torch in November 2007 in the Olympic Torch Relay (started in St. John’s) for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. He regularly runs and strength trains and is constantly doing coaching seminars to help the MUN Judo athletes and coaching staff. He is the Chief Instructor of our club.

Note: Judo has been an Olympic sport since 1980. Judo was designed as a sport first and self defense second. There is no punching or kicking in judo. Matches are won by throws and holdowns or for adults as well,by submission from chokes or arm locks. Our dojo prepares judoka for competition or is purely a place to get a really good workout and have fun. We have students from 7 - 70 years of age!

Note: Sensei Bruce Mann, Ph.D. (Education), a 2nd degree black belt in Judo, and 3rd degree black belt in Shotokan Karate. Sensei Bruce is nationally certified as a Judo Coach and as a Provincial Referee in both Judo and Karate. He has current memberships in Judo Canada (#130788), the Newfoundland & Labrador Judo Association, the Newfoundland Karate Association (#0020), the Newfoundland & Labrador Karate Union, the Coaching Association of Canada (#CC1044511), and the National Coaching Certification Program.
